From living in a city, which boasts one of the world’s largest 10 shopping malls to a city with just under 25,000 people, was a big change for Benhur Balaba and his family.
Ben as he is fondly known here lived in Manila in Philippines and ran his own business while his wife Ma.Fe was a chemical engineer before they decided to move to Australia.
While it has not made much of a difference in income for the family it was Fe’s dream come true to move to Australia.
Their first impressions about Whyalla was shock and surprise but since arriving in July last year they have adjusted to their new lifestyle and are enjoying the peace and quiet.
Fe is yet to find work while Ben’s working with Multi Serv as a manager and both of them sometimes miss their luxurious life back home.
“We had a big house and at least three house helps so we miss all that but I wanted a better life for my kids and I am happy we moved,” Fe said with a big smile.
“I always tried back home to get my sons to do some household chores but they escaped due to the help we received from maids but here they are compelled to do a few things themselves and I am proud of how they are adjusting.
“Australia will make them independent and self sufficient and I am sure after I find work they will become more responsible.”
Ben said life was simpler in Whyalla and everything was within proximity, which he enjoyed the most.
On a lighter note Fe said her first week in Whyalla was very good and she was surprised with the Australia hospitality and the eagerness to help.
Recalling her early days she said she walked into local parliamentarian Lyn Bruer’s office to make some enquiries about job prospects and was referred to WEDB.
Not being able to drive and find her way around a staff member offered to drive her to WEDB.
She was very touched by their gesture because the staff could have referred her to a cab.
Another ongoing heart-warming gesture she encounters all the time is when she tries to reach something on the high shelves in supermarkets and someone offers to pick up the items she needs.
The couple said they chose to move to Australia for a better lifestyle and brighter future for their children and the past year has been very good for all of them
