North new flag favourites

10/08/2008 11:30:00 PM
North Whyalla continued their winning run by defeating top team West Whyalla for the second time in a row, in very cold and windy conditions at Memorial Oval on Saturday.

Whilst it did not rain too much during the game, the cold conditions with an ever changing wind, did not make it conducive for good footy and the low scores reflected that.

North scored first through powerhouse forward, Nick Prokopec, who marked and kicked well despite the wet ball.

North clearly had the most of the ball during the first term and could have gone in to the first break with a bigger lead even though West were probably kicking with the wind.

West isn't the top team for no reason and even though they failed to kick a goal in the first quarter, they did stop a rampaging North Whyalla from taking a big first quarter lead, mainly due to some good marks from Ben English.

North also had a bad run of injuries during the first half and at one stage did not have one spare player on the bench with Nathan Preiss carried off on a stretcher with a serious leg injury and two other players receiving medical attention in the change rooms.

West was able to reduce the margin during the second quarter although scoring was becoming harder and harder to do.

Numerous ball ups, stagnant play and lots of tackling really reduced the game to a slow crawl, even though the intensity was still high.

The usual stars for North were playing well, Menzies, Trezise and Seymour and West were struggling to stop this trio from picking up kicks and Brad Medlin also proved a handful.

Fraser Marshall continued his good form for West in the first half as well as Dylan Everett and coach Sawford.

The third quarter was just as 'slow' as the first two and North were able to edge away just slightly before three quarter time.

What did excite the crowd was a melee that involved about twenty players that seemed to go on and on.

The game was played by the remaining 20 for about five minutes while the players let off some steam.

The small margin that North held going into the last quarter wasn't quite enough for them to be safe but after they scored the first two goals of the last quarter, the game was basically finished.

Prokopec didn't have his usual effect on the scoreboard but still took some key marks and delivered the ball well but West's Aaron Smith would be pleased with his rebound and kicking and was well supported by Kode Patterson.

Brad Henderson took some big marks and really stood up for West in the second half.

Scott Daly was excellent in his role as a small forward for North but ultimately it was the amount of ball that players like Menzies, Clothier, Seymour and Trezise were able to get that really killed off West.

Some late goals to North blew the margin out a little more than the closeness of the game indicated.

North have clearly shown in the last two months they are the real deal and are now the team to beat even though West will probably still finish top.

The even spread of players contributing must be pleasing to their coach.

These two teams will finish in the top two and will play each other in the second semi final in September.

Based on the intensity of this game, it should be game not to miss.
