Recognition for Azzo and Banjo

18/07/2008 9:50:00 AM
Very rarely in Whyalla football when the fifth side plays the top side it would be considered the match of the round.

But this is the case on Sunday when a confident Rooster outfit will take on the smooth running West Whyalla, in the Mark ‘Azzo’ Azzopardi and Peter ‘Banjo’ Marron tribute match at Bennett Oval.

Central have now strung two games together and is playing with some new found confidence.

It still has some quality players to return in Luke and Matt Stanton and promising youngster Matt Holmes.

Let’s not forget Daniel Sims, one of the best midfielders in the competition when fit.

Central and West have met twice this season, and it took the league leaders mid-way through the last quarter to put both games out of reach.

This happened earlier in the season when Central were not travelling well.

One would expect this week with a full red army available they will be full of confidence to do well.

There was a lot to like about Central last week.

Its senior players came into their own and used the ball like the Rooster of old and with the continuing development of younger players like Byles, Nicholson and Andrew and Micheal Schwenke, the side can play to the potential it should.

West continues to do no wrong, with another hard fought victory over the second placed side.

It was once again full of character and rest assured there’s only one thing worse in Whyalla football than waving a red rag at bull and we all know what that is.

From defence to attack the Dragons are the best balanced side in the town that is why it has not played a bad game all season.

Rumour has it ruckman Harland will not be returning.

This will hurt, but just how much remains to be seen.

If the Roosters can exploit this, Boath can give his runners first use of the ball enough times, it will add to their chances.

The Roosters have a lot to play for.

Richie Burton will play his three hundredth senior game, they are playing their traditional rival and they have finally found some form - not to mention the atmosphere of the tribute match.

However, this West team continues to excite and impress and with so many youngsters, who as I said some weeks ago are still improving and if Dillon Everett is any example, there may well be more improvement to come.

The dragons by 30 points.

Goals needed: Scott Collison hit the park for Central last week, and will need a big game this week if the Roosters are to beat West.
