South fend-off gallant Roopena

1/07/2008 4:35:00 PM
In typical windy Whyalla conditions, South fended off a gallant Roopena to win by 33 points.

The Demons kicked with a five goal breeze and got things underway through Dwayne Colson.

But the Roos, who were working hard in the centre through Fiebig, Manfield, Ewings and Bodinner and along with the defensive Kane Grund, were repelling everything Souths could offer.

But goals to Jarod Reid, Guy Sultan on the run and a Troy Miller snap from the pocket, saw the Demons make the most of the breeze to lead by 40 points.

After a first quarter lesson, the Roos stood up and put on eight goals without a whimper from the Demons.

Bodinner was in everything and Ryan Trezise kicked a couple.

The Grund boys were working hard and South looked in trouble and were making a lot of poor decisions.

The Demons needed to respond and as usual Ray McIntosh along with Guy Sultan, playing against their former team, stood up and the Demons were able to get their necks in front going into half time.

After watching South make these poor decisions in the second quarter, the Roos followed suit.

But South couldn’t capitalise and wasted opportunities.

Enter skipper, Ryan Baker, as he took the game by the scruff of the neck and kicked the next three goals lifting the Dees.

Shane Cox was easily as impressive kicking an unbelievable goal from the pocket just before three quarter time.

The Dees now led by 34 points going into the last change.

With the aid of the breeze in the last quarter, the Roos would have felt confident.

A Matt Manfield goal on the run from 50m gave the Roos the start they wanted followed by a Paul Zucker strong grab and goal to give them a sniff.

But there was one thing stopping the Roos and that was Ray McIntosh.

He was everywhere as he brought his team mates in to the game and the Demons were able to kick away and run out the winners by 33 points.

The Demons’ Guy Sultan, Ray McIntosh, Ryan Baker, Troy Miller and Dwayne Colson were superb and for the Roos Toto Bodinner, Matt Manfield, Kane Grund and Webster were equally as good.
