The match of the year will unfold at Memorial Oval this Saturday when league leaders West take on the flamboyant South Whyalla team.
The Dragons have lost only the one game for the year, two weeks ago to North Whyalla, and were certainly not disgraced given the amount of players unavailable through injury.
Last time the two met, the Dragons got over the top of the Demons in the final quarter.
A lot will depend on who is available, one would think after the two-week break both clubs should field their strongest side.
South’s forward line is in great form, averaging more than 20 goals over the past four games, but they will come up against the best defence in town this will be crucial to the outcome.
South may have the edge in the midfield where Guy Sultan, Eddie Wilson and Ray Mcintosh are in great form, but the ability of this Dragon outfit to rebound so quickly from its backline and hit their forwards has been a strength all year.
This will be the first real test of character for the Dragon’s youngsters, coming off a loss and coming up against an inform South Whyalla unit, but to date they have passed every test.
The highlight of this game will be the leg speed all over the ground.
Match-ups such as Manfield versus Baker, Jackson versus Aaron Smith, young Norman versus young Eddie Wilson, the battle of Sultan versus Sawford will be a beauty, Harland, English versus Mcintosh, Page in ruck could well have a bearing on the outcome.
I do hope both coaches give their players a licence to play uninhibited attacking entertaining football to thrill the huge crowd that hopefully will be in attendance.
This game has the potential to be one of the best seen in Whyalla for a long time and an indication of the ever improving standard in Whyalla football.
It will also be an opportunity to view the many exciting youngsters presently on show, which both clubs have in abundance.
The question is, who is going to win?
If both clubs have all players available it will be a close contest, South deserve to go in as favourite.
The Demons’ form over the past four weeks has been excellent only being challenged by Roopena, their overall fitness and team play has improved since earlier in the season, its backline, which may have been seen as a weakness earlier, has certainly improved and will have to be on song to negate the Dragons goal kicking potential.
West have done nothing wrong all season.
The Dragons have been a model of consistency and when games have been there to win in the final quarter they have been full of character and produced their best.
It is for this reason and their pace to be able to match it with the Demons they will just get over the top by 13 points.
