Westlands stay on track

17/08/2008 11:30:00 PM
Westlands United travelled to Jenkins Park to take on Lions on Sunday with the hope of extending their lead at the top of the ladder.

The first half saw a game that had few opportunities and it was no surprise that the game would go into half with the score still at nil all.

In all fairness Westlands probably had the better of the half, with Lions not responding to the pressure put on them by the Reds.

When the teams emerged from the half time break it appeared as if the second half could mirror the first with little opportunities available to either side as the game seemed to present itself as a pretty tight encounter.

As the half progressed Westlands began to test the Lions defence with a number of opportunitites.

It was Rowan Mitchell who got Westlands off the mark after the Westlands defender found himself at the back post to knock home from 10 yards following a 18 yard box scramble.

Mitchell would again feature in the action when Garry Anderson managed to cut the ball back from the bye line on the right to find Mitchell again at the back post ready to head in Westlands second goal of the game.

Lions seemed to wake up following this goal and began to mount a challenge to break the defence of the high flying Reds.

The introduction of substitutes Ryan Carruthers and Jarred Bonello paid off as both became contributors in the goal from Lions.

Carruthers gathered the ball on the right and found Bonello inside who in turn fired a shot at Westlands keeper Steven Perkins.

After the difficult ball was parried, Gordon Worsnop made good positioning to tap home the consolation goal.

Westlands defeat Lions 2-1.

Reserves:

Lions 2 (Pyett 2)

Westlands 1 (McEwan)
