South Whyalla have easy win

7/05/2008 3:06:00 PM
South Whyalla easily defeated Weeroona Bay by 47 points at Bennett Oval on Saturday.

Weeroona Bay kicked to the scoreboard end, which was favoured by a two-goal breeze, but it was South who did most of the early attacking.

They had a clear edge in pace and went into attack repeatedly with Shane Cox kicking two goals and others coming from ruck rover Ray McIntosh and full forward Peter Jackson.

The Bays got one back from Nathan Bone, but they were in big trouble with South leading by 22 points at the first change and with the breeze in the second term.

South peppered the goals in the second quarter but could only manage to score a paltry seven behinds.

This was due partly to a tight Weeroona Bay defence but mostly because their kicking for goal was deplorable since they also kicked out of bounds on the full on several occasions.

The Bays only kicked a solitary behind for the term and trailed by 28 points at the long break.

Their 1.2 for a half of football was a very poor performance.

South have recruited extremely well this year.

Their first ruck consists of three Whyalla News Medallists in Brad Page, Ray McIntosh and Guy Sultan and they all played very well in the first half.

Anthony Malcolm was winning a lot of the ball for the Bays and using it well, while Matt Ellis and Gary Hoffmann were defending soundly.

The wind dropped after half time and South added 5.6 for the third term while the bays replied with 2.0.

Souths five were all singles and they come from Dwayne Colson, Reg Reid, Troy Miller, Kane Newsham and Bevan Dooley, while Malcolm and Geoff Jones were responsible for the Bays two.

The Bays final quarter was their best.

They took chances and seemed determined to put a bit of respectability on the score board.

This they did and their score of 4.4 was better than they managed for the first three quarters.

They actually won the quarter because South could only muster 3.5.

South’s winning margin of 5.17 at first glance doesn’t look very convincing, but when you consider that they had 35 scoring shots to 13 plus at least eight shots that missed the lot it was a most decisive victory.

They have now won three in a row after dropping their first game to Westies and are firmly entrenched in second place on the ladder.

Weeroona Bay started the season with two good wins but have now lost their last two and have to face Roopena at Memorial Oval next Saturday and then a resurgent North Whyalla after the Eyre Peninsula Carnival.

Ray McIntosh was best for South and also best on ground.

He is extremely fast, takes a lot of over head marks and is also good when the ball is on the ground.

Brad Page rucked very well while Guy Sultan was also very effective.

Ryan Baker was an inspirational captain while Gavin Jonker and Shane Cox were other good players.

Anthony Malcolm topped off a very good game with two goals while Gary Hoffmann’s effort at full back in restricting the talented Peter Jackson to one goal was his best so far this season.

Matt Ellis turned in another fine performance while Lee Ringland, Anthony How and Andrew Hoffman also played well.

South will play North at Bennett Oval next Friday night at 8pm, in what could well be the match of the round because North are now playing very good football.
