The Whyalla Football League has ruled out the possibility of fielding a tenth SANFL team as suggested in a recent media report saying the article was speculative.
Whyalla league president Jim Hewitson said there were no intentions of fielding a tenth team from Whyalla and no talks were held with any organisation on the issue.
He said he was not contacted for comments when the report was published.
SANFL commissioner with the country portfolio David Shipway said there was no discussion or proposal on the issue.
He said the SANFL was aware Whyalla is going through an economic boom and will be a major region but that did not mean the league will field a team.
“We have looked at teams from the Northern Territory and Tasmania but nothing worked out,” Mr Shipway said.
“But there were never any discussions about Whyalla.
“If we are to consider something the proposal will be from WFL and I have spoken to Jim after the article was published.
“There was never any discussions and the writer has published his opinion on the issue.”
According to the write-up the “go-ahead points for having Whyalla join the SANFL as its tenth team are community growth, sponsorship prospects, venue, history, easy transport and promise for the Aboriginal communities in the far north where Australian football is offering more than hope”.
