A cold, wet and muddy day can best describe conditions for Whyalla Motorcycle Club's third round motocross.
The field consisted of some 70 motorcycles in 11 classes, including a first time out for the quad class.
There was only one competitor in the junior class of quads, but young Christiaan Labuschagne seemed to have a good time riding around the modified motocross course.
The senior quad class saw Harry Starkey take out the honours over Riaan Labuschagne
As promised the Vintage class doubled in competitors from last meeting.
Whyalla's speed demon Colin Kranz turned up on a Suzuki TM that he picked up one day before the meeting and he still managed to win all three races ahead of Garry Smith and Darren Pickert.
Bike trouble saw Rob Luxton only compete in one round but we saw enough to look forward to future races between him and Smith.
Corey Kruger, Mark Hubner and newcomers Brian Turner and Tony Leach rounded out the field, again providing the entertainment of the day.
There were only three demo 50 riders, Jesse Marshall, and first timers Sebastian Hector and Josef Puddy.
The conditions were a little muddy and made navigating the course rough on these little bikes, Josef taking a little longer to get around the track after stopping at one of the flag points to have a chat with his Pa and "wait for his dad to catch up."
The 50cc class, as expected was taken out by Oscar Maule from Port Augusta, but with a bit more experience on their machines Sam Marshall and Sam Woolford from Whyalla will soon be putting the pressure on.
The 65cc 7-9 year class saw Whyalla's up and coming star Eric Brereton win all three rounds, with some good competition coming from Marcus Thompson from Kimba and Oscar Maule from Port Augusta.
In the 10-12 yr 65cc, things went as expected with Izak Maule flying around the course, followed by fast improving Michael Finn from Port Augusta and Dylan Hogan from Whyalla.
The 85cc 9-11 small wheel class was a beauty, again as expected Izak Maule from Port Augusta took the honours but young Jackson Joyce from Kimba finished a mere one point behind after some really good riding.
Fast improving Dylan Hogan backed up his good riding from the 65cc motorcycle and finished third, his efforts earning him the rider of the month.
Justin Thompson and Jaedyn Rayner from Kimba tousled for the first two places all day in the 85cc 12-U16 with Justin managing to win two of the three and pip Jaedyn by five points.
Whyalla's very much improved Mark McMahon took out third place, not too far back in the field was John Daniels and Trent Kranz.
The junior 125 2str / 250 4str also provided great spectator value, with two of the top state riders competing, Daniel Banks from Kimba was far to good on the day for Mitchell Norris from Port Lincoln.
Best of all for Whyalla club, young Josh Tilbrook finished on equal points with Mitchell, only losing second place for the day on a count back, Josh is riding his machine very well and if he keeps up his great form is in contention for a top three finish in the State titles.
The first two races in the senior prolites class saw Steve Semark dominate, but due to work commitments he failed to compete in the last race leaving the door open for Paul Vukosavljevic from Port Lincoln to finish the day with one win and two second places, Brian Moldenhauer and Bryce Hogan, both from Whyalla finished in the minor places ahead of Tyran Kranz.
Brock Smith won all of the open class races, riding extremely well the whole day ahead of Colin Andrew from Whyalla and Rosco Macdonald from Port Lincoln finishing in second and third in all the rounds.
The veteran class had four competitors, and Mark Maule from Port Augusta proved that he can win even when there is competition.
Pat Puddy from Whyalla finished second ahead of Peter Thompson and Brett Rayner from Kimba.
