Diggle boxes in Melbourne

29/07/2008 8:52:00 AM
Whyalla’s Chelsea Diggle represented South Australia on the weekend at the Australian Boxing Championships in Melbourne.

Diggle will be joined by Dylan Dhamu, Matt Hamill, Jacob Parham and Sera Raikiwasa.

They will be competing against other states for the selections of the Olympic team.

Unfortunately Diggle and Raikiwasa are unable to make the Olympic team as there are no female divisions.

They will be travelling with their state coach Charlie Coumi and team manager Steve Storic.

Diggle and Storic are hoping to win and bring home Whyalla’s first Australian Champion.

She has been training hard in the lead up, with continuous rounds of pad work and training techniques, with Storic planning different tactics to handle all styles of fighters that stand in her way.

“Chelsea has a great chance to win and after the first bell rings and the pressure is off, I don’t think much will bother her,” Storic said.

“She has been sparring great in the gym and with all the help around her, she’s ready”.

The female entries from other states are Eleanor Bowden (NSW), Monica Siemonieux (QLD) and last year’s champion Kelly McGrath (WA).

“I hope Chelsea will meet last year’s champion to really test how far she’s come, in the gym she dedicates herself 100 per cent and hopefully it will pay off,” Storic said.

Diggle will be competing over two days with the first being an eliminator.

While she admitted to being extremely nervous, she is concentrating on everything she has done in the gym and putting it into action on the day.

Diggle’s goal in boxing is to go as far as she can, wanting to show other women it can be a good sport for them too.

There is the annual Whyalla Fight Night to be held at the Westland Hotel on Saturday, September 13.

Coach Storic hoped there will be an opponent for Diggle.

The Whyalla Boxing and Fitness Club will bring new fighters to the show with some great young rising stars and some big heavyweight senior action.

David Walsh, Chris Reid, Rory Cornick, Luke Larsen, Cameron Larsen, Shaun Schaaf and Henry Shae will also be on the card.

With a clean sweep of wins last year this time the city opponents have got their work cut for them.

The club is seeking sponsorship to cover costs of the show and if businesses can help they can contact Events Whyalla.

Storic would like to thank everyone who helped last year.

He also wished Diggle the best of luck at the Australian Championships and a special thanks to Justin Fennell for his help and time.
