A forecast of showers made lady golfers apprehensive at the start of the eighteen hole stroke qualifying round of the ‘Pat O’Brien’ match play event and the second round of the president’s trophy.
Although clouds loomed near during the day, conditions were well suited to the playing of golf with the temperature reaching 19 degrees celcius.
The Sundowner Hotel-Motel provided sponsorship for the event with the winners and club most grateful.
Beverley Shiell returned to the winners list and accepted the voucher for division one with a nett score of 76.
A very keen golfer, Shiell’s should continue to do well after an interrupted season.
Division two was won by Audrey Discombe with a score of 75 nett.
Discombe continues to do well with sheer consistency.
If not for one wayward drive on the dreaded ninth causing all sorts of problems the score would have been much less.
Three ladies on the ball winners list all on 77 nett were Margaret Herbert, Kay Freeth and Val Callaghan with Diana Slater on 78 winning her first ball in the competitions.
It was pleasing to see a newcomer come in with a good score.
Slater a no fuss, no frills golfer moves well and hit the ball competently and with great accuracy.
She should continue to achieve sound results with more game time.
The L’Oreal sponsored nearest the pin on the seventh, won by Gelske Rogers whose drive was straight and true.
Jenny Pollock won the McLeod Motors eighteenth hole nearest the pin (second shot) after edging out Diana Slater by a slight margin who in turn had edged out Val Callaghan by just a few inches.
A tight finish indeed.
The draw for the Pat O’Brien match play will see several ladies teeing off on Tuesday with some to have a bye.
Starting time will be 9.30am for the first group off the first.
Players will need to study the match index as to strokes given.
On Tuesday the nine hole stableford event drew the most competitors for the season, and was played in great golfing conditions.
The course and surrounds are looking magnificent and with a pleasant sunny day thrown in for good measure one could not ask for more.
Glenda Davies just fresh back from an overseas trip continued her dominance with an excellent score of 19 stableford points from yet another overseas holiday maker in Beverley Shiell also on 19 points.
Carmel Dickeson played well to come in with 18 points along with Jean Brown and Audrey Discombe and Annette Cotter both scored well to accumulate 17 points.
On Monday our pennant team will travel to Port Pirie to play the second leg of the tri series competition.
Just a few points off the pace of leaders Port Augusta it will be interesting to see who handles the ‘scrapes’ well.
Both Port Augusta and our local ladies are used to grassed greens so the challenge will be a beauty.

One gentleman who has recently had shoulder surgery had some unexpected luck recently.
His wife completely lost her voice for days.
The experience has left ‘Bob’ believing in miracles (just joking Marg!).
On a sad note our golf club members were sorry to hear of the passing of Nola Tilly, wife of Dave.
Nola was a past member of the bowling club and also the golf club.
She was secretary of the ladies committee (golf) for two years.
Our sincere condolences to Dave and family members.
It was great to have Rita Dawson join us last week for a cuppa and chat.
An ex-member of the club Rita now resides in Port Lincoln.
Her bright and cheery demeanor is our loss and Lincolns’ gain.
Our members club dinner is to be held on Friday, August 1 and is a dress-up ‘P’ night which should be fun.
There is plenty of scope re fancy dress but it is not compulsory.
Tickets are now available.
