New league champions take on Croatia

27/08/2008 11:30:00 PM
On Sunday Croatia will play host to newly crowned 2008 WSA League Champions Westlands United.

Before previewing this game I would first like to congratulate the Red Devils not merely for being this season's league champions, but also for the consistently excellent and entertaining soccer they have played the entire year.

Indeed, the Reds have proved beyond doubt that they are the best team in Whyalla at the moment and given the fact that their squad is so full of talented youngsters, they look set to dominate Whyalla soccer for at least the next couple of years.

On recent form this match promises to be a very tight one given the fact that both teams won in fine fashion last weekend.

On Saturday the Reds waltzed past a very jaded looking Steel to add to their imposing winning streak that includes victories against Wanderers, Lions and Croatia.

Since their last defeat against Westlands, Croatia has been equally impressive winning their last three games including a composed victory against the Blues last Sunday.

Yet whenever these two teams have met this season the form book goes out of the window.

The reason for this is simple: the Reds are Croatia's bogey team - a side they have struggled to score against all season; a side Croatia have found difficult to prevent from breaching their own goal with disturbing regularity.

Part of the problem for the home team is the fact that they often play three at the back (albeit with a midfielder playing very defensively and very deep).

Such a formation seems to suit Westlands' style of play perfectly because United have a very fit, fast and hard working midfield that pushes forward and strives to get amongst the goals with every opportunity.

As a consequence Croatia's defence invariably struggles, numbers wise, to cope with an attack that often contains five or six players.

Westlands also have two outstanding wide youngsters in the form of Michael Harvey and Aaron Hayward.

Both have the ability to penetrate deep into opposing team's territory down the wings and send over pinpoint crosses into the penalty area.

Whenever this occurs against Croatia it has the effect of pulling defenders out wide, leaving a vacant space around the penalty box for the Reds' midfielders to run into, receive the ball, and have a strike at goal.

A three-man defence will struggle all day to contain an attack which uses the flanks as effectively as Westlands do.

If Croatia is to come away from this encounter with a win they will have to change their defensive / midfield formation (and tactics) somewhat, and then hope that the visitors, who as stated earlier are the best in Whyalla, have an off day.

Up front I think that Croatia may well give the Reds a bit of a scare this time around especially if speedsters Marik and Reggie Evans are on song.

Accordingly, if Joslyn-Neil switches in and out of attack and midfield (as he did against Wanderers), this should pull Rowen Mitchell out of position, thereby creating a space in front of the Red's goal for Marik and Evans to exploit.

Final Verdict: an entertaining, skillful and close encounter that the Reds should win by a narrow margin.
