 Steel too strong for Blues

Steel too strong for Blues

On Sunday it will be ‘first verses last’ when the Blues play host to current league leaders Steel United in Round 12 of the League Championship.

On paper this should be an easy win for the ‘Green Team’ given the simple fact that every time these two sides have met this season United have thumped the Blues comprehensively.

Indeed, in their last encounter Steel won by a massive eight goals to nil and clearly, throughout this season, has developed a massive advantage psychologically over the league’s last placed team.

Much of this advantage, I feel, revolves around the differing size of the players in both sides.

Steel are replete with individuals who whilst skilful - are non-the-less tall, aggressive and are arguably the best team in the league at using their weight to push players off the ball.

In stark contrast Wanderers are a much lighter and younger outfit, who at the moment are much too polite in their endeavours to tackle opponents.

As a consequence, if the Blues are to come away with an unlikely positive result, their players must be prepared to really get stuck, put their bodies on the line, and not allow themselves to be physically dominated by their larger opponents.

On the weekend Wanderers once again lost, but it must be stressed that for much of this game they outplayed Lions and did not deserve to lose so expansively.

If they can carry this form with them throughout the second half of the season, I can really see them pulling off some shock wins and climbing up the league ladder.

For two main reasons congratulations must go to the Blues’ coaches: first for being so brave in drafting in some very classy, albeit very young, players into the side.

In particular, young Stopp and Marinelli, both prolific scorers in the Under15 / Under17 leagues, who will surely start hitting the back of the net on a regular basis once they get used to the hustle and bustle of ‘A’ grade soccer.

Second, Coaches Dawson and Fewster drastically altered their formation to an attacking three-four-one-two.

This gave Wanderers three possible forwards to play to, each capable of holding up the ball, thereby enabling the Blues to push out of their own half and take pressure off the defence - something that has rarely happened this season.

This novel line-up - untried in training because not enough Wanderers players turn up to train - did work wonders last weekend, but whether it will work as well against the Green Team is another matter entirely.

United have a very stable set-up at the moment with Veart and Jackson up front; an awesome midfield in the form of the Fay brothers, Leddington and young Wales; and a back four that has Docherty playing sweeper (and he looks excellent in this position).

It is a very experienced team that plays well together, knows where its strengths lie and has gotten used to winning, and winning well.

I forget the countless times I have seen Steel turn defence into attack simply by playing a long ball out from the back to their two excellent forwards, who hold up the ball so effectively, until the midfield can get up in support.

Yet they are also a side that when Leddington and Wales are in midfield, have real ability to dribble in and around the penalty box and then have a crack at goal.

This team is the ‘real-deal’ and I honestly cannot see another team (other than Westlands perhaps) preventing them from winning the league.

Final Verdict: although the Blues do appear to have turned the corner somewhat and are starting to look competitive, I do not think they have the strength or experience to overcome United.
