 Westlands edge out Lions

Westlands edge out Lions

15/07/2008 1:50:00 PM
Lions travelled to Dakalanta Park on Saturday to take on Westlands on a windy day not suited to attractive football.

Both teams were pretty much unchanged from previous weeks with the exception of veteran Garry ‘Ando’ Anderson who started up front for the home team.

Both sides had come into this game full of confidence and were determined not to let their winning streaks come to an end.

This became quite obvious, as the game was played defensively tight by both teams with chances few and far between.

Whilst the game was extremely tight throughout, Lions seemed to have the better of the chances in the first half with Aaron Peacock, Daniel Rhodes and Manuel Gonzales each having an opportunity to get their teams off the mark.

With the game still at 0-0 at the end of the first half, opposing coaches were reluctant to make any hasty changes which may have unbalanced their side.

As the game progressed Westlands began to stamp some authority on the game in the hope of getting that home win they craved.

As Westlands began to get some possession on the ball the home team also managed to threaten Lions’ goal.

The breakthrough finally came when defender Rowan Mitchell found space stepping out of defence with the ball, hitting it low and hard at the goal from 30 yards.

The shot somehow eluded Lions goalkeeper Tyler Welgraven and made it into the back of the net delighting the Westlands United faithful.

This goal was enough to take the points on the day with Westlands winning this important clash.

The team will now be looking forward to facing Steel United next week in the much anticipated top of the table clash between the two sides.

Westlands 2 (Holland 2).

Lions 6 (Pyett, J. Berkett, Cash 2, McOmish OG, Coulter).
