The Ocean Eyre Community Lottery finally drew to an end on Saturday, with an ecstatic local couple walking away with the big prize.
It was fantastic to see the prize go to a Whyalla resident, but it is even better that local
community groups and clubs benefitted from the profits.
In a day and age where volunteer organisations are struggling for numbers, something this
simple to give them a helping hand financially is a great idea.
I have seen many clubs and organisations struggle by trying to raise funds through chocolate fundraisers, Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day raffles and plenty of other inventive, but time-consuming ideas.
This lottery made their lives a whole lot easier, and the tickets pretty much sold themselves!
It has been marketed as the biggest lottery outside of Adelaide, but I think it beats any lottery the city could ever run, because it has benefitted the local community.
As we all know, Whyalla is set to ride the wave of the mining boom, and the success of Ocean Eyre could be attributed to that.
Now, the developers could have sat there rubbing their hands together and taken full
advantage of the profit coming their way - but instead they chose to give something back to the community that is giving to them.
Their generosity has helped many struggling groups, and I am sure there are many people out there grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this lottery.
It would be great to see more of this generosity spread throughout Whyalla, as more and more investors come to town and the employment sector begins to flourish once again.
Congratulations to the winners of the home, I hope it brings you many happy memories.
But more importantly, thank you to all involved in organising this lottery, the Whyalla community is better off because of it.
