Is Spencer Gulf going salty?

The editor,

It was with great interest to read in the Advertiser, Friday, July 4, 2008, "Assault on algae".

Is Spencer Gulf heading the same way?

The salinity level in the Whyalla area has risen from 33g per 100g to 43g per 100g.

The authentic view of water in Spencer Gulf is changing.

Algae congregation in Spencer Gulf are notiecable.

The sea grasses are disappearing in the areas.

The supratidal salt marshes, the intertidal and subtidal areas are noticeably changing.

Using oysters as a water quality parameter (filter feeders) the results are not the same as 20 and 12 years ago.

Scientific reports, of within and surrounds of the Spencer Gulf including areas from, the entrance to Franklin Harbour to Whyalla to Port Augusta to the top of the Gulf on the west side and from, Wallaroo to Port Broughton to Port Pirie to Port Augusta to the top of the Gulf on the east side are difficult to site and names of any of these reports or studies would be greatly appreciated.

It would be greatly appreciated if contact is made if other readers are observing or researching the changes within Spencer Gulf.

It would also be greatly appreciated if the salinity of the water where the China Olympics in sailing is taking place is known.
